Mark Helme Masonry
Helme Masonry is dedicated to stone and brick construction. We provide design, site preparation and concrete installation as well. We are advocates of the durability and environmental benefits of masonry construction over the use of non-renewable resources and the rights of homeowners to a hearth with their home. |
Biography Mark Helme started his apprenticeship in 1973, guided by John Cassel of Los Gatos, California, who taught him the principles of stone and brick masonry and the importance of remaining a student of one's craft Mark constructed his first fireplace in 1976 using the proportions of the eighteenth century inventor Count Rumford and has devoted much of his efforts towards making fireplaces beautiful, environmentally efficient and seismically safe. Starting in 1977 he served four years as a cement mason and finisher and still loves to be at concrete pours. In 1985 he combined the look of brick and stone with the strength of concrete and rebar to build a colonnade in Santa Cruz. He has worked with many architects, from San Mateo to Carmel, as advisor on masonry and fireplace design. He also serves as an advisor to the State of California on masonry construction. |
